Bobby Shmurda has finally been released from his deal with Epic Records following his own plea for his release on social media stating, “I did six years in jail trying to get off this label before I came home.”
Shmurda rose to fame in 2014 after the release of the music video for his song, “Hot N****” went viral on the former short-form video social media app Vine, along with the “Shmoney” dance move which he and his friends do throughout the video, which eventually became an iconic meme with celebrities incorporating the dance move within their own videos and performances. During this time, he was quickly signed to Epic Records with L.A. Reid.
He was arrested in 2014 shortly after his viral success, pleading guilty to the charge of criminal possession of a weapon. The police assigned to Shmurda’s case stated his songs were documents of what he and his confidantes were doing over the years. After serving his full sentence, he was released in early 2021 and made is first return to the stage at Rolling Loud later that year.
During Shmurda’s incarceration L.A. Reid subsequently left Epic Records in 2017 after sexual harassment allegations resurfaced from a previous employee. Sylvia Rhone has since taken over as chairman and CEO of Epic Records. Shmurda has remained vocal on social media about the lack of control that Epic Records has given him, even before his incarceration, regarding the release of his new music.
Bobby Shmurda took to Instagram to publicly announce that he has been released from his deal with Epic Records and has signed his release papers, prompting fans to look out for his new music that he will now be releasing independently from now on.
