“First Person Shooter” is a song by Canadian rapper and singer Drake featuring American rapper J. Cole. Released on October 6, 2023, as the sixth track from Drake’s eighth studio album, “For All the Dogs,” this song has taken the music industry by storm. The collaboration between Drake and J. Cole was confirmed during a special episode of “Table for One” on the day of the album’s release. Drake referred to the collaboration as “fourth quarter magic,” revealing that it was the final song to be recorded for the album.
The lyrics of “First Person Shooter” are a testament to both artists’ lyrical prowess. The song explores themes of success, legacy, and rivalry in the rap industry. Both artists address their positions in the rap game, asserting their dominance and reflecting on their journey and challenges that the two went through.
In the song, J. Cole reflects on his continuous success, arguing that he, Drake, and fellow American rapper Kendrick Lamar are the “big three” in rap music. Drake also , on his part, shouts out to iconic figures like the Beatles and Michael Jackson in reference to his fame and commercial success.
“First Person Shooter” debuted at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming Cole’s first and Drake’s thirteenth number-one single on the chart. This tied the record for most solo number-one singles by a male artist with Michael Jackson.Critics have praised the song for its “subtle-yet-triumphant” yet “high-octane” production that starts out with a “warped” vocal sample while both artists exchange a few bars. The track was especially noted for its “futuristic and energetic” production that enabled Drake and Cole to showcase their skills.
“First Person Shooter” is more than just a song; it’s a statement. It’s a testament to Drake and J. Cole’s dominance in the rap industry and their continuous evolution as artists. As fans, we can only look forward to more collaborations between these two titans of rap.
