SZA, born Solána Imani Rowe, is now one of the most vocal and well-known figures in modern R&B. With her distinctive sound and intelligent poetry, SZA’s musical career has been both dynamic and groundbreaking. So, let’s dig in to see how SZA revolutionised R&B and is reinventing it every day. 

The Early Years: A Different Voice Takes the Stage 

SZA was born and raised in Maplewood, New Jersey by a Muslim father and a Christian mother. Her music interest grew from early on, shaped by everything from jazz to indie rock and soul. But it wasn’t until she signed with Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) in 2013 that her career started to flourish. SZA’s debut EP See.SZA.Run (2012) and S (2013) both went on to get picked up by TDE, which saw her sign with the label. She had a lovely voice and a blend of classic R&B, soul, hip-hop and electronic sounds that immediately set her apart from other artists. The material she released early became the foundation of her signature sound. 

The Breakthrough: Ctrl  

SZA made her career turning point when she released her debut studio album, Ctrl, in 2017. SOS debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and is a mix of contemplative melodramas and danceable songs, illustrating her flexibility when traversing emotions. Songs such as "Good Days" and "Shirt" have become hits everywhere and helped further solidify SZA’s reputation as one of the most powerful voices in music today. They’ve complimented the album’s lyrics, emotional range, and its creative incorporation of multiple musical influences. 

SZA’s Influence on R&B and Culture 

SZA is an artist and her work extends far beyond her songs. She’s become a voice of empowerment for young women, of self-love, self-acceptance, and emotional vulnerability.
