The Latin GRAMMY Awards are changing it up this year for songwriters!
On March 21, 2023, The Latin Recording Academy released a press release announcing various additions and changes to the awards:
“As part of The Latin Recording Academy®’s commitment to evolve with the ever-changing musical landscape and to best serve its membership body of music creators and professionals, the organization announced that several changes, a new field and categories have been added to the Latin GRAMMY® Awards Process.”
For all the Latin songwriters out there, the Latin Recording Academy introduced the latest awards field and category: Songwriting and Best Songwriter Of The Year.
Songwriting is now the 20th awards field available in the Latin GRAMMY Awards. The Best Songwriter Of The Year award “recognizes the written excellence, profession and art of songwriting.” To qualify, songwriters need to be listed as a songwriter or co-writer on at least six newly written songs.
Another welcome addition within the adjacent Singer-Songwriter field is the new Best Singer-Songwriter Song award. This award only applies to songs from albums competing for the Singer-Songwriter Album award. As well, the song’s lyrics must contain at least 51% Spanish, Portuguese, or any native regional dialect.
Outside of songwriting, the Best-Portuguese-Language Urban Performance award was announced along with various category amendments affecting submissions.
Manuel Abud, the CEO of The Latin Recording Academy assured their audience that their “priority is to effectively represent all the Latin music creators that we serve” and that these changes “reflect the constant evolution of our music.”
All of these updates apply to the 24th Annual Latin GRAMMY Awards show that is happening later this year in November. For those that don’t know, the awards show will be leaving America and taking place in Spain for the first time.
If you’d like to read the full press release, check it out here!
Also, if you’re a Latin music creator interested in putting your work forward to be considered for an award, you can do that here. Online submissions are open from March 23 to April 10.
