Everyone knows Tik Tok as the app that blew up during COVID as a way for people to create and share short videos for others to enjoy. The video’s posted range from funny skits, dances, lip sync videos and much more. The app has allowed a new platform for artists, aside from other social media, to put their music out there.
Lil Nas X is an artist that has used this platform to his benefit, which has allowed him to have a significant amount of exposure to his music. He has gained over $14 million from Tik Tok with songs such as “Old Town Road” and “Panini” becoming great hits.
As Tik Tok has become such a great hit, on July 6th, it was announced that they will also be using the app as a music streaming service. Like any other music streaming app, it will be accessible to its users through a paid subscription. The streaming service will be internally available in Brazil and Indonesia. TikTok has made the agreements through three major receding companies; Sony Music, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group. The partnership will further ensure the launch is successful.
TikTok originally made this announcement back in October of 2022. Since the announcement, Spotify has lost approximately 2.6% of its users. TikTok Music will allow its users to stream viral Tik Tok songs and sing along with real-time lyrics such as karaoke, alongside a song identification tool called Song Catch. Unlike other music streaming services such as Apple Music, Spotify is most at risk with Tik Tok music coming out. Spotify is a pure-play streaming platform; other platforms have other ties to them. Prime Music and the e-store Amazon Prime are connected to Prime Video. Apple Music is related to IOS.
