In an era where pop and electronic music dominate the charts, Icelandic singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Laufey has emerged as an unexpected champion of jazz for Gen Z listeners. Through her unique blend of jazz-inspired melodies, modern lyricism, and social media savviness, Laufey is introducing a new generation to a genre that many considered relegated to the past. Her mission? To prove that jazz is not just alive but relevant in today's music landscape.
Laufey's musical journey is as enchanting as her sound. Born in Reykjavik, Iceland, to a Chinese violinist mother and an Icelandic economist father with a penchant for Chet Baker, her upbringing was steeped in a rich tapestry of musical influences. From a young age, Laufey was exposed to classical music, big band standards, and, crucially, jazz, which would come to define her artistic voice. "I didn't have singing lessons, really, growing up, but I had lots and lots of cello lessons. I think when I started singing, I approached singing like I approached cello," Laufey shared in an NPR interview, highlighting her unique approach to music from a young age.
Laufey's style, a delicate fusion of jazz's classic charm with contemporary flair, speaks directly to the hearts of young listeners. Her songs, while deeply rooted in jazz traditions, are imbued with the experiences, language, and sensibilities of younger listeners, making her music current. "My songs are old sounds with modern lyrics," Laufey says, underlining her method of bridging generational divides with her music.
With her album, "Bewitched," Laufey invites listeners into a world where jazz and modern narratives coalesce seamlessly. The album serves as a testament to her goal of making jazz accessible to younger audiences without alienating the purists. Her ability to honor jazz legends while crafting a sound that resonates with today's youth is a delicate balance that Laufey navigates with grace.
Laufey's impact extends beyond her music. Her presence on social media platforms, particularly TikTok, has played a crucial role in demystifying jazz for a generation more accustomed to bite-sized content and viral trends. Through candid videos and performances, she peels back the layers of jazz, inviting young listeners to explore its depth and beauty. "I always feel like I'm kind of balancing the two worlds," she admits, highlighting her dual role as a custodian of jazz tradition and a pioneer of its evolution.
Moreover, Laufey's story resonates with those who feel out of place, offering a message of hope and perseverance. Reflecting on her own experiences of feeling different and out of sync with her peers, she uses her platform to encourage young listeners to embrace their uniqueness. "I just wish I could go back and give myself a squeeze and be like, hey, like, look at what we've done now," Laufey muses, reflecting on the encouragement she would offer her younger self.
Laufey's approach to jazz is not about reinventing the wheel but rather injecting it with new life, ensuring its survival and relevance in the digital age. By weaving her personal narrative with the timeless allure of jazz, she creates a musical tapestry that appeals to both the young and the young at heart. As she continues to break barriers and challenge perceptions, Laufey stands as a beacon for the future of jazz, proving that with passion, innovation, and authenticity, the spirit of jazz can captivate any generation.
